Mourning the death of Siddhartha Auji

We are writing to express our profound sense of loss, anger, and grief for the tragic death of Siddhartha Auji in Achham. On Monday, Siddhartha ji died of burns following self-immolation in front of Bayalpata Hospital. We convey our deepest condolences to Siddhartha ji’s family and to the colleagues and community members who are impacted by his death. 

Siddhartha ji worked with Nyaya Health Nepal (NHN) for the last year and a half in facilities support at Bayalpata Hospital. His work involved keeping the hospital clean and providing a dignified and safe experience for patients. This incident occurred in the aftermath of losing his employment with NHN in the wake of funding shortfalls.

Even as we grieve, we honor Siddhartha ji’s memory by looking deeply within ourselves, our institutions, and our structures to ask the uncomfortable questions: how could this death have been prevented? What could we have done better to protect his employment, his dignity, and provide greater support to him? How could we have safeguarded the life of a Dalit healthcare worker with limited options in extreme duress? These are questions that need to be answered.

Internally, Possible’s staff, board, and advisors are committed to the deep work of understanding how our structures, processes, and actions contributed to this injustice. Possible has worked with NHN over the course of the last decade. 

As a partner to NHN, Possible makes the following commitments:

• To provide meaningful and long-term support to Siddhartha ji’s family. 
• To support NHN in their mental health crisis response by providing services and resources for their staff across the country.
• To continue our fundraising efforts to ensure the livelihoods of their healthcare workers.
• To conduct a rigorous review of our practices and structures at Possible to address issues of inequity within our organization so we can more effectively and equitably support health and justice in Nepal.

Additionally, we recommend and will offer NHN support to:

• Conduct an independent, rigorous investigation into both the immediate events that led to his death and the deeper structural causes of the death. 
• Re-assess employment practices to improve equity and ensure that the most vulnerable employees are protected.

(यो सुचनामा आत्म-हानी र आत्महत्याको बारेमा लेखिएको छ। यदि तपाइलाई आत्म-हानी वा आत्महत्याको सोचाई आएको छ भने, अमेरिकामा १-८००-२७३-८२५५ र नेपालमा १-६००-०१०-२००५ (बिहान ८ बजे देखि बेलुकी ६ बजे सम्म) सम्पर्क गरेर तालिम पाएका व्यक्तिहरुसँग कुरा गर्न सक्नुहुन्छ।)

न्याय हेल्थ नेपालमा कार्यरत सिद्धार्थ आउजीको असामयिक निधनले हामीलाई स्तब्ध, शोकाकुल र आक्रोशित बनाएको छ। वहाँले बयालपाटा अस्पताल अगाडी आत्मदाहको प्रयास गर्नुभयो, अनि उपचारको क्रममा कोहलपुर पुगेपछि वहाँको निधन भयो। सिद्धार्थ आउजीको शोकाकुल परिवारप्रति हामी गम्भीर समवेदना प्रकट गर्दछौं।

सिद्धार्थजी गत साढे एक बर्ष देखि बयालपाटा अस्पतालमा काम गर्दै हुनुहुन्थ्यो। अस्पतालको सरसफाईको महत्त्वपूर्ण जिम्मेवारी लिएर वहाँले उपचार गर्न आउने समुदायका व्यक्तिहरुको लागि स्वच्छ, सुरक्षित र गरिमामय वातवरणको सिर्जना गर्न विशेष मद्दत पुर्याउनुहुन्थ्यो। सीमान्तकृत दलित परिवारबाट आउनुभएको सिद्धार्थजी अछामको साँफेबगरमा बस्नुहुन्थ्यो। न्याय हेल्थ नेपालले पाउने आर्थिक अनुदानमा कमि भएको र संस्थाबाट वहाँको रोजगारीको करार नविकरण नगरिएको अवस्थामा यो घटना घटेको हो।

हामी शोकमा सिद्धार्थजीलाई सम्झिदै आफूलाई, आफू आबद्ध भएको संस्थालाई र यी सबैलाई समेट्ने परिवेशलाई गम्भीर रुपमा नियालेर हेर्दैछौँ। यो क्रममा हामीले अप्ठ्यारा तर सोध्न जरुरी प्रश्नहरु पनि अघि सार्दैछौँ: वहाँको मृत्युलाई कसरी निवारण गर्न सकिन्थ्यो? वहाँको रोजगार र वहाँको मान मर्यादालाई जोगाउन अझै के गर्न सकिन्थ्यो? गम्भीर तनावमा परेका अनि जीवनमा अरु विकल्प् नदेखेका एउटा दलित स्वास्थ्य सेवाकर्मीको जीवनलाई कसरी जोगाउन सकिन्थ्यो? यी प्रश्नहरूको उत्तर पत्ता लगाउन अत्यन्त जरुरी छ।

कसरि पोसिबलको आफ्नै भित्रि संरचना, आन्तरिक प्रक्रियाहरु, र व्यवहारहरूले यो अन्याय निम्त्याउन मद्दत गर्यो भन्ने कुरामा गहन विश्लेषणको लागि पोसिबलका स्टाफ, बोर्ड, तथा सल्लाहकारहरू प्रतिबद्ध छन्। न्याय हेल्थ नेपालसँग दश वर्षभन्दा लामो साझेदारी गर्दै आएको परिवेशमा पोसिबलले निम्न प्रतिबद्धता गर्दछ:

१. पोसिबलले सिद्धार्थजीको परिवारलाई सार्थक रुपमा दीर्घकालीन सहयोग गर्ने

२. न्याय हेल्थ नेपालले आफ्नो कर्मचारीहरुको मानसिक स्वास्थ्य को लागि उचित सहयोग र सेवा प्रदान गर्ने क्रममा सहयोग गर्ने

३. सबै स्वास्थ्यकर्मीहरूको जीविकोपार्जन सुनिश्चित गर्न आर्थिक सहयोग संकलनको कार्यलाई निरन्तरता दिने

४. हाम्रो संस्था भित्रका असमानता हटाउन आफ्नो व्यवहार र संरचनाहरूको कडा समीक्षा गर्ने, जसले गर्दा हामी अझ प्रभावकारी ढंगले नेपालमा स्वास्थ्य र न्यायलाई अघी बढाउन सकौं

२. असमानताका समस्याहरूमा सुधार ल्याउन र सबैभन्दा संवेदनशील कर्मचारीहरूको सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित गर्न संस्थाको रोजगार सम्बन्धि नीति-नियमहरुको पुनरावलोकन गर्ने
