This Story Doesn’t Have an Ending

With her baby on her lap, wrapped in a blanket, Dilli looked like any other happy mother who just delivered a baby.

But her story is different.

Dilli is most likely the first woman from her village to give birth in a hospital.

She’s from a small village called Balyalta in Achham District, a three hour jeep ride and a four hour walk from our hospital. When she first became pregnant, she assumed she would deliver her baby at home, a deeply rooted — and dangerous — tradition practiced by many women in rural places around the globe.
